"River Pilot Station" by Thom Zehrfeld
Astoria, Oregon is home to the Columbia River Pilots...one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. In Astoria, the mighty Columbia meets the Pacific Ocean and it is like two freight trains colliding. The River Pilots must go out to sea, usually rough and dangerous seas, climb aboard freighters headed to inland ports and guide them into the river and into safe shipping channels. This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color.

Thom Zehrfeld lives in Newport, Oregon on the Central Coast and, is fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful spots in Oregon! The ocean, the beach, the sea's fresh air naturally inspires his art! There is always something exciting to capture with a camera! However, it's not all seascapes...Thom likes capturing automobiles, trucks, motorcycles. And, he travels many places to do just that! He uses mostly color, adding textures and, lately has gone head first into digital painting...giving some photos a dimension that allows for a very unique look.
