Description
This leopard was high up in a tree guarding his kill. Our guides thought it probably had an impala. It's amazing how they drag a good size animal, by themselves, high into a tree. We were told it's very special to see a leopard. Two ladies on our tour had been on this same trip 5 times. One time they did not see any leopards. Other times only one. We saw them almost every day on our 14 day trip. It was magical.
Leopards can see seven times better than humans in the dark. They can reach a top speed of 36 MPH so you don’t want to be in their way. Their incredible agility allows them to climb trees. They will carry their prey in their teeth up into a tall tree, even as high as 50 feet. This keeps it away from some of the other animals that would try to scavenge it. They will eat off that animal for up to three days. The kill is quite often heavier than the leopard’s body weight. Baby leopards are called cubs. The female will hide her cubs in lairs to protect them from Lions and Hyenas when she is out hunting. She changes the lair every few days to avoid having it discovered by predators. Leopards are listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss. Its fur is noticeably soft with rosettes. They have a white tipped tail.
