Description
"The Astoria Column" by Thom Zehrfeld
The Astoria Column ( Astoria, Oregon) is a Pacific Northwest icon and is a testament to the pride of the people who settled the Pacific Northwest, and to even those who live there today.
It was built in 1926, is 125 foot tall and is patterned after the Trajan Column in Rome. The mural on the column depicts 14 significant events in the early history of Oregon with a focus on Astoria's role including Captain Gray's discovery of the Columbia River in 1792 and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
It overlooks the Columbia River, City of Astoria, Oregon and the 4 mile long Astoria –Megler Bridge that connects Oregon to Washington across the Columbia River. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color, and then incorporating a unique painted effect.
