Description
"Old 300" by Thom Zehrfeld
The Waterfront Trolley (Old 300) is one of Astoria, Oregon's main attractions. It travels along the Columbia River and provides riders with magnificent views of the Columbia River and Downtown Astoria.
Riders can ride the trolley for practically nothing. The trolley is "Old Number 300" and comes from San Antonio, Texas.
It was built in 1913. San Antonio ended their streetcar service in 1933. However, Old 300 is still the property of the San Antonio Museum Association.
However, it has been around in Oregon for years. Before it found its way to Astoria, it ran a few other places in Oregon. Finally, the trolley found its way to Astoria and a volunteer group restored Old 300.
It had considerable wood rot. The exterior canvas roof of the trolley was re-covered, and an interior bead-board ceiling was installed.
The interior and exterior were painted. And instead, of an overhead electrical line they added a diesel trailer to power the trolley.
The Astoria Riverfront Trolley is a three mile trek. It uses old freight railroad tracks. And, more importantly you will learn a great deal from the conductor about Astoria on the trip.
This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color, and then incorporating a unique painted effect.
