Artist's Description

"Little Red Caboose!" by Thom Zehrfeld

Thanks for visiting my fine art photography site! Cabooses may be a thing of the past and, many have been put out to pasture but, they still hold memories of rail days gone past!

A caboose was a car attached to the rear of the train. Usually, as the crew's quarters. They were required for switching and shunting, on freight trains and, to keep a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and freight.

The caboose dates to a derivation of the Dutch word "kombuis," which referred to a ship's galley. Use of cabooses began in the 1830s, when railroads housed trainmen in shanties built onto boxcars or flatcars.

This one was photographed on the outskirts of Tillamook,Oregon on the Oregon Coast.

This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color.

About Thom Zehrfeld

Thom Zehrfeld

Thom Zehrfeld lives in Newport, Oregon on the Central Coast and, is fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful spots in Oregon! The ocean, the beach, the sea's fresh air naturally inspires his art! There is always something exciting to capture with a camera! However, it's not all seascapes...Thom likes capturing automobiles, trucks, motorcycles. And, he travels many places to do just that! He uses mostly color, adding textures and, lately has gone head first into digital painting...giving some photos a dimension that allows for a very unique look. Photography awards include the “McLoughlin Promenade” which is displayed at the Clackamas County Historical Museum in Oregon City. Also, he has won the Springbok National...
