Description
"Chitwood Covered Bridge" by Thom Zehrfeld
There are some fifty historic covered bridges in Oregon. Many were built between 1905 and 1925. At one time there were almost 450 in the State.
Personally, I am going to make it a goal to go around the State, with passion, and photograph as many as I can. Many are in Lane County in the Cottage Grove area.
This particular bridge, the Chitwood is in Lincoln County close to Eddyville and crosses the Yaquina River. It has been rebuilt a few time since 1893 and you are seeing the 1926 version.
I walked over the bridge and, inspected it the best I could, and it is in magnificent shape! The hardwoods in the background are turning and, if you look closely you will see fog.
