"3719" by Thom Zehrfeld
3719 is located on Dock 7 in the Port of Newport on the Oregon Coast. Actually, these are boat bumpers but, are used to mark, distinguish where crabbers throw their crab rings off shore in the Pacific.
The crab rings are baited and left for hours so that the crab can gather into the traps. The crabbers come back within hours and gather their crab rings. Colors, numbers distinguish whose buoy and crab rings belongs to who.
Crabbing is an important industry to the area. The Dungeness Crab is one of the most sought seafood varieties in the world. When you cross the Bar to go into the Pacific you can see acres of buoys that mark where the Crab Rings are located to trap the prize Dungeness.
With a distinctive identification number, color and GPS location crabbers can locate them easily!
