Description
"Gold and Wine Iris" by Thom Zehrfeld
Welcome to my fine art photography site! The name Iris takes its name from the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris. OK, she rode rainbows!
The most common Irises are the tall bearded ones which are at least twenty eight inches tall. Irises are very popular among gardeners because they are perennials.
They really do not bloom for a long period of time but, they are easy to grow, hardy and, attract butterflies and hummingbirds. There are some 300 species. Irises have three large outer petals called falls and three inner upright petals called standards.
The falls may have beards or crests. Bearded Irises have soft hairs along the center of the falls. In crested Irises, the hairs form a comb or ridge. Majority of Irises bloom in early summer.
Another cool species are the Siberian Irises which are tall and graceful with slim, grassy foliage. They are ideal for making borders or, fit into wild flower gardens.
This image has been converted to High Dynamic Range (HDR) by combining three different exposures to give the image more detail and color, and then incorporating a unique painted effect.
